Synopsis: A young British student falls in love with an American student and gets herself into immigration trouble when she overstays her visa.
Review: A young British college student named Anna ( Felicity Jones ) falls in love with an American student named Jacob (Anton Yelchin ) in the U.S. The two have a great time together and don’t really take the U.S. immigration system seriously. One day Anna tries reentering the United States but is stopped at the airport and deported back to Britain. Jackie ( Alex Kingston ) Anna’s mother comes up with the idea for the two to get married in order for Anna to stay in the U.S. and that’s where the trouble begins.
Felicity Jones is very enchanting and lovable in this movie. Obviously the only reason to watch this film is if you are a fan of Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, or both. I get asked the same question over and over again on social media all of the time “Who are the top actors in Hollywood?”, well I would have to say that one key talent or skill of a top actor/actress are the ones with the ability to turn tin can screenplays into gold. That being said, if Jennifer Lawrence and Felicity Jones where not cast in this film, it would be an awful failure. These two actresses are the only reason to watch this kind of film.
I honestly don’t know why such an A-list actress like Jennifer Lawrence would play such a minor and forgettable role in this film. I think that these kinds of roles cheapen her as a brand and the impact that she brings to a film as an actress. From excellent films such as The Hunger Games (2012) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Jennifer Lawrence is more of a powerhouse of an actress the helps sell these blockbuster films. This film does not do her justice.
The cinematography is inconsistent. Some of the time the camera person is using a hand held camera that is shaking all over the place. The camera work over all is just alright, nothing special. The lighting is just OK. The wardrobe, set dressing and backgrounds work well in this film. This film seems like both characters have bipolar disorder. The film is appropriately named “Like Crazy”. This couple seems to hate each other at the same time the two can’t live without each other, which make this film frustrating to watch. People typically want to escape from real life situations like this by watching a movie just to have this film put the situation right in your face. The movie is average and nothing special.
