The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: A
Director: Greta Gerwig
Stars: Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh
Synopsis: The story of a group of young women who survive in a world after the civil war.
Review: A young writer named Jo March ( Saoirse Ronan ) tries her best to make ends meet and support her family by selling her stories to a local publisher. Her sister Meg March ( Emma Watson ) is complacent with a much more simple life and this angers Jo who has an unrealistic view of their relationship.
Emma Watson does a good job as always but this film does not bring out the best in her acting abilities. Even though this is a decent film, I think the fact that this is a female centric film is what intrigued Emma Watson into acting in this movie on top of it being a classic. I have seen her do better in movies such as Colonia (2015) and the Harry Potter films. This role is “decent” enough.
The film shows us a very real look at how women were treated not only back in time but in today’s world as well. For more details of what I’m telling you I suggest you watch the film Suffragette (2015), a movie based on the struggles of brave women had to fight for women’s right to vote. In that film we have the excellent actress Helena Bonham Carter.
The cinematography is great, the color is a little drab, the lighting is suitable, and the backgrounds are done well. I personally like the old world setting of this film rather than setting this film in the present day. It feels like you are looking back into time and we get to see what it was like for these people to have survived in the old world, even if it’s not historically accurate (it's the filmmaker’s fictional world after all). Obviously this film was targeted to females who might be a little angry in today’s world but filmmakers are walking a very fine line between creating a good piece of art and a film that crashes at the box office like Birds of Prey (2020). These films are too niche to really survive in today's film markets (pre-corona virus). The film is alright but not as good as most people are saying it is in my opinion.
