Synopsis: In the 1790s Lady Susan Vernon is a widow who has taken up temporary residences at her in-laws estate. Susan is highly determined to play the role of match maker for her daughter Frederica.
Review: Lady Susan Vernon ( Kate Beckinsale ) is staying at her in-laws estate. While she is there, she is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica ( Morfydd Clark ) and her self as well. In the possess, Susan navigates her way through the political landscape of the time as well as the not so good rumors that are going around.
Kate Beckinsale plays this part perfectly. It is like we are looking at one of her past lives. She fits the film flawlessly. Obviously she is British so this comes naturally to her. The film does not have an all British cast, yet the cast works very well. The acting is so well done that you feel as though your are looking through time its self.
The cinematography is alright but not the best. The lighting is done above average but does not bring out the best in the backgrounds, which are absolutely fantastic, The set dressing is the best. The very classy décor is breath taken and carries you away to the time period the film portrays. The films wardrobe is amazing, just simply amazing. The musical score is appropriate for the films day and age but not done with finesse. Instead of easing the music into the scene in a way that compliments the film, this sounds like you where watching the movie and someone turn on some ‘tea music’ really loud while you are watching the film. Star Wars The Last Jedi (2018) does this the right way when they ease in John Williams score into a scene. Here they just blast your ear drums with an orchestra ( head phone users beware ).
The film takes a while to get into. this movie stagnates and takes some time to get the films plot moving forward. If your patient the film gets slightly better. Over all the film looks amazing. You feel as though you are looking into the past but the story is not the best at all. The story is very boring. The story does not give you major twists or turns so if your looking for a film that is historical, calming, and just as classy I suggest The King’s Speech (2010) starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter. If you really want to see a Kate Beckinsale movie, I suggest the film Brokedown Palace (1999). As for this film, its just passable.
