The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 8/10
Director: Derek Cianfrance
Stars: Rachel Weisz, Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender.
Synopsis: A very tenacious young woman makes her move on a new lighthouse operator who marries her and starts a new family. Things don’t go as planned and all seems lost until a baby is found in a small boat drifting off the coast of western Australia.
Review: Tom Sherbourne ( Michael Fassbender ) is a war veteran trying to treat his PTSD by taking a job as a lighthouse operator, secluding himself from everyone. One day Tom is called to meet with his employers, so he leaves the lighthouse for a few days. He then talks to his boss and they discuss extending his contract. While in town he meets an enchanting young woman named Isabel Greysmark ( Alicia Vikander ). The two marry and attempt to have children when a small boat is seen drifting off of the coast with a crying baby in it. The film takes place in the 1920's.
This is one of Rachel Weisz’s best performances. When she is pissed off its too real. The desperation and sadness in her voice and facial expression was perfect. Michael Fassbender always does excellent in his films. He is a very strong A-lister that can breath life into dead scripts, I’m looking at you Alien: Covenant (2017). As the film progresses you see his demeanor change based on the timeline of the film and the circumstances. Alicia Vikander, our new tomb raider, is such a superb actress. I loved her work in the film The Danish Girl (2015), Tomb Raider (2018), and Ex Machina (2014). I am very impressed by her work. She does very well here in this film. I look forward to seeing more of her movies. For a film like this a you would need only the best actors to pull this off. Luckily the director has the best actors cast in this film. Well done.
The film focuses on the concept of hope. As Michael Fassbender’s character says in the film, “I just try to keep the light burning for whomever might need it”. The pursuit of happiness is what gives the characters hope and gets them into trouble as well. The desperation in the characters is so strong that they engage in unethical behavior in order to satisfy their selfish desires. This whole movie has a wide array of emotions. Attachment in a strong need for love is all throughout the film, lucky for us it works out to be a good movie.
Absolutely superb cinematography, top notch all the way. The lighting, color, set dressing, wardrobe, and backgrounds are all top quality. The organic backgrounds are highly appreciated. The sound of the movie is very atmospheric. You hear the sound of the beach coast. Such a high quality and beautiful film. This movie is very good and very underrated. Although some parts of the movie is a little too fast in my opinion. Mainly the marriage scenes. The actors are one of the main reasons this film works. The movie has all kinds of twists and turns that will keep you interested in the film. Not an action movie by any means. A well above average film.
