Synopsis: A high school teacher begins teaching his students about history with a new and controversial method.
Review: Tom Crick ( Jeremy Irons ) is a high school teacher who begins teaching his students about English history from his perspective while he was growing up as a young man. His stories are controversial and cause many students to complain to the principle for inappropriate behavior.
Lena Headey does very well in this film. She really gets deep into the character and puts on a great performance. Ethan Hawke does well in this film also. Both of the celebrities are very good at what they do and are a high point in this movie.
The film focuses on the life of a man and since he did not raise a child, he passes on his knowledge to the next generation in the form of his stories. Like the film Big Fish (2003), storytelling is a way some people use to connect with other people.
The cinematography is well done. The lighting, backgrounds, and set dressing are all well done. The film does look dated. The movie is very slow paced and quite. This movie is shot in such a way that it relives a scene from the main protagonist’s past while the main characters are watching it in the present. This is very confusing at first because you don’t have any explanation as to what is happening and why. When there is an explanation the characters from the past are interacting with the characters in the present which alters the history of the story. There are better films to watch. This movie also has a very disturbing baby abortions scene that involves Lena Headey. This film is just average and nothing special.
