The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 7/10
Director: D.J. Caruso
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Mel Raido, Duncan Joiner, Lucas till.
Synopsis: A mother and her young son release unimaginable horrors from the attic of their rural dream home.
Review: Dana Barrow ( Kate Beckinsale ) is the mother of a middle class family. She is an architect who specializes in restoring old homes. She moves her family out to a rural dream home, after the family has suffered a tragedy. As they unpack, Dana starts to notice that something is wrong. Not only does she see and hears things that are not there, she has delusions of events that do not seems to have happened. She continues to restore the home when she finds a locked room that she can not open. Eventually she stubbles across the key and unlocks a ghost that starts to haunt the house.
Kate Beckinsale plays a serious Alpha female mother. She wears the pants in the family. Her husband David is very Beta. Unfortunately his inability to show more leadership does not help Dana’s emotional condition. She negotiates the contract between herself and Ben Phillips ( Lucas till ). She tells him what the terms are going to be and he is shocked by how tenacious she can be. I can’t say I blame her. In today’s political world, it seems like women in general have to stand up for them selves and take on the more Alpha role in order to protect themselves. If not, then most women will more than likely get run over by bad men or worst, victimized. Control is the number one thing Dana wants. Yes she loves her child and her husband, but she wants to keep the order and have all things done on her terms. Sadly, it seems like this is where the world is headed.
The movie is very similar to the film Dream House (2011). The main protagonist questions their reality. They are not sure what is real. Did they mentally break? Are the ghosts that they are seeing real or a psychological delusion? What is real? Yes this kind of film is for those who are obsessed with the after life. There is a niche market of ghost movies that some film junkies love. I my self don’t really like ghost movies. Hollywood can take a real story and make up anything they want. I know that most movies are like that but I just don’t find ghost films appealing.
The cinematography for the most part is perfect. Some scene seem like they are filmed by a different director. The camera work is inconsistent to say the least. Some scenes are shot better than others. The color and lighting is done well but not always great. Some shots are washed out while others are immaculate. The backgrounds and set dressing are fine. The film tends to give the audience weird flash backs that are incoherent. We pretty much have to guess what is happening and piece all of the scenes together like a puzzle rather than a plot twist. The story is not a smooth path from start to finish. The film is alright. Its not a great film but its not bad either. The movie is middle of the road.
