The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 6/10
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Daniel BrÜhl, Cara Delevingne, Ava Acres.
Synopsis: A mentally addled writer is hired to write a movie script about the brutal murder of an American tourist on vacation in Italy.
Review: Thomas ( Daniel BrÜhl ) is a writer hired to write a script about the murder of an American tourist, but he is disgusted by this task. He is separated from his wife and does not have custody of his child. He speaks to his former family over video chat. Being away from his former family, while out of the country, and researching the brutal murder of an innocent young girl has caused him to spiral into a very dark place within his mind.
Kate Beckinsale plays another very ambitious reporter just like in her film Nothing But the Truth (2008). The character seems exactly the same but in different circumstances. One being in distress and the other one being on vacation but the two characters are not very different at all. Daniel BrÜhl does good job in this film. He also did well in the movie Colonia (2015) with Emma Watson. Some how he is good at playing irresponsible characters. The same director of the film I Want You (1998) starring Rachel Weisz is directing this film as well but this movie is most definitely a large improvement in both cinematography and musical score. That film ‘I Want You’ looked very bootlegged, even for the technology of the time.
The film focuses on the concept of delusion. The age old question of ‘what is real?’ As our main protagonist is delving deeper into insanity. We learn that he has a very strong conformation bias towards the murder case. He believes that the accused are innocent and creates a delusion of Dante’s Inferno that is interlinked with the murder. You see similar imagery from the film Inferno (2016) starring Felicity Jones. The main protagonist is very passive. Take this as a lesson for future film makers as to why you should avoid passive protagonists at all cost. This character has no substance and it is very hard to sympathies with the character.
The cinematography is superb. It reminds me of the movie Angels And Demons (2008). The musical score was excellent. The backgrounds, set dressing, wardrobe, and lighting was all superb. This is a beautiful film was no substance what so ever. A truly beautiful and boring movie that does not need to exist, but yet it does. I would normally say watch this film if your bored but this will make it worse. The movie is a take on the Amanda Knox story in real life and not a very good one at all. The main protagonist is a loose cannon that is in dire need of professional mental help. Watch this movie if your obsessed with Kate Beckinsale and you just want to watch all of her films. The movie is just passable due to looks and sound only.
