The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 7/10
Director: Stephen Sommers
Stars: Rachel Weisz, Brendan Fraser, John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, Dewayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Synopsis: The mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to a museum in London where a crazed cult raises him from the dead and he begins his reign of terror once again.
Review: Rick O’Connell’s family is under attack from crazed cult members obsessed with the idea of raising Imhotep from the dead. O’Connell’s son Alex ( Freddie Boath ) is wearing a magical bracelet needed by the cult so that Imhotep can challenge the Scorpion King ( Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson ) and rule the world. Since the bracelet can not be removed from the little boy’s arm, the cult kidnaps young Alex and brings him to Egypt. Rick ( Brendan Fraser ), his wife Evelyn ( Rachel Weisz ), Her brother Jonathan ( John Hannah ), and his friend Ardeth Bay ( Oded Fehr ) set out on a mission to rescue Alex and stop Imohotep from taking over the world.
This was not Rachel Weisz’s best performance but can you really blame her? These mummy movies can’t really be taken seriously. I feel like she is absolutely capable of a better performance but she can’t because of the forced silliness of the script. I prefer her roles in The Fountain (2006), Dream House (2011) ,and Agora (2009. She has played in slightly comedic roles in Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) and The Brothers Bloom (2008) as well. Brendan Fraser does a good job but he has always been silly and comedic. I think that comedy is definitely his strong suit. Its good for him since comedy kept him employed in Hollywood for so many years but that’s also too narrow of a niche and limits his success. This is the high point of his career unfortunately. .
More silliness from this franchise. From made up mythologies to super powerful magic armies of Anubis warriors. You just can’t take this movie seriously and you shouldn’t try to. The creators of this franchise seem to have their own version of Egypt and it is not a very good one. I am kind of reminded of the Stargate series seeing the Egyptian mythological figures portrayed as villains.
The cinematography is very well done. The lighting set dressing, backgrounds, and wardrobe are very good. The weak point of this film is the awful CGI. I am truly amazed that the CGI is worse in the second movie than the first. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s final boss fight is CGI! That’s just not right. The film starts to look really bad with the now dated CGI because it doesn’t blend well at all with the rest of the movie. Its extremely out of place. As for the movie its self, ridiculous but entertaining. I wouldn’t recommend this film. The movie is just slightly better than middle of the road.
