of Everything

Synopsis: A look at the relationship between the famous physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Hawking.

Review: Stephen Hawking ( Eddie Redmayne ) is a young student learning physics form professor Dennis Sciama ( David Thewlis ). He dates a young lady named Jane ( Felicity Jones ). He comes across an idea about physics that is so brilliant that his teacher encourages him to do the math necessary to prove the theory. As things start to go well for Stephen, his life takes a turn for the worst, Lou Gehrig’s disease. With the help of his wife Jane, he tackles one obstacle after another while making even more scientific discoveries.

Felicity Jones shows real emotion as wife who cares for her sick husband and the weight of keeping the household in tact. This has to be one of her best performances out of all her movies I have reviewed. You can really empathize with her character. An amazing performance. Eddie Redmayne is completely impressive. He really becomes Stephen Hawking in every way possible. It was like watching Stephen Hawking play in his own movie rather than watching Eddie Redmayne play as the physicist. David Thewlis is very appropriately cast as Dennis Sciama, one of the professors teaching Stephen Hawking. He also played Harry Potter’s defense against the dark arts teacher professor Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) as well as the psychologist Kenneth Raines in the film Regression (2015). His teacher like characters are always introducing the main protagonist to another way of thinking. The same can be said for his character Aries in the movie Wonder Woman (2017). Always showing another side of things.

As we all know Stephen Hawking has passed away very recently as of the time of this review. I had already had next on my list to review this movie, then Stephen Hawking had passed away immediately after. One of the best actors of all time Eddie Redmayne is playing this character. He did so well that he won an award becoming the first millennial male to win an Oscar for this film. There are plenty of theories I could talk about but theories are not the focus of this film. This is a look into the life of a man who has impacted the entire human species with his words, ideas, and his life. The movie shows a lot of pain. Pain is the catalyst that really brings out the acting talent and range in Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne. Some of the best performances I have ever seen on film.

One of the great things about this film is that the story enters into Stephen Hawking life when the major turning points happen to him. This way the film stays interesting and makes good use of all of the screen time. The movie makers obviously cared about Stephen Hawking so they made the best movie possible out of respect to him. Interestingly the same cannot be said about some of the Steve Jobs movies. Some of them are really well done and very accurate films while some make you question why the films where even made.

The cinematography is perfect. I love how the director makes great use of the widescreen shots allowing for the audience to see the world in which Stephen Hawking lived his life. The use of lighting is superb. This shows how artistic the film makers are, how well they understand lighting, and how it effects art. The backgrounds and set dressing are well done. The use of zoom out and pans are perfectly used in this film to show the feelings that the characters are having during certain scenes as a means of ‘show don’t tell‘. The musical score was absolutely perfect. The story is always being pushed forward so the movie does not stagnate. The story is smooth, going from one scene to another. One of the highest quality film I have ever scene. No action scenes or violence instead a deep and meaningful story about a man who struggled and triumphed through life against all odd. Excellent film and perfect score.
