The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 6/10
Director: Terry Jones
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Simon Pegg, Sanjeev Bhaskar.
Synopsis: A group of aliens imbue a human with powers that will allow him to do absolutely anything he wants as an experiment to study the human race and judge whether or not they will allow earth to exist.
Review: A group of very strange looking aliens are in the process of judging whether or not to destroy the earth. They want to see if the human race is worthy to exist. After the aliens confer with each other, they decide to give a random human male named Neil ( Simon Pegg ) powers that will allow him to do absolutely anything. From making a million dollars appear out of nowhere to mind control. Neil is on the razors edge of morality now that he has absolute power.
Not the best Kate Beckinsale film. Just like with the movie Click (2006), comedy is absolutely not her strong suit at all and this genre seems to be holding her talents back. Kate is capable of far more complex roles in movies like Nothing but the Truth (2008), Love & Friendship (2016), and Underworld (2003). I think she does these films because they are fun to her and its less stressful, but they are hurting her career in my opinion. Complex films show why she is one of the absolute best British actresses in media and number one here on this website.
The film focuses on the concept of morality. Is the main character going to do bad things with his new found powers? This movie reminds me of the Stargate Sg-1 TV show by MGM, season four, episode seventeen, title name ‘Absolutes Power’ where Daniel Jackson ( Michael Shanks ) is given incredible powers by a Harcesis child ( an advanced being of intense power ). The show and this movie go in similar directions but what’s in a persons heart is what ultimately manifests through their powers. For Daniel Jackson in Stargate, he went towards an evil road that made him the most powerful person on earth and got many people killed out of his arrogance. Our main protagonist Neil in this film is a much more simple and humble man who questions which direction his powers are taking him and seeks the help of his friends. There is something very dangerous about given an ordinary human this kind of power without them earning and appreciating the abilities. A person who is already doing good for other people and truly enjoys helping people, may be a better candidate than a regular and ordinary human man. I am reminded of Thanos from the movie Avengers: Infinity War (2018) where Thanos could have used his powers to create unlimited resources for all beings with the power of the infinity stones but is hell-bent on killing half of the universes population instead to feed his personal agenda for selfish reasons.
The cinematography is forgettable and unimpressive. The lighting is alright for what it is. The backgrounds, set dressing, wardrobe are OK. The film is funny and but its not a must see film at all. If your bored and need something to watch or you just need to have something on in the background as you work on homework or some project, go ahead in see this movie. If you want good comedy this film may disappoint you since its really not consistently funny movie, just some of the time. For me, as long as its NOT an Adam Sandler film, its a small victory on its own. The movie is just middle if the road.
