The top 10 British Actress movies
Score: 6/10
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Stars: Rachel Weisz, Colin Farrell, Jessica Barden.
Synopsis: In a dystopian future, single people are obliged to find a romantic partner according to the law or be turned into an animal.
Review: David ( Colin Farrell ) has just been cheated on by his partner and must find a new one according to the law. He must stay at a hotel where he can court a woman to see if she will be his partner. He and his friends team up and look for a partner by any means they can.
Rachel Weisz is hardly even in this film! She plays a disembodied voice for half the film. This reminds me of the film Eragon (2006) where Rachel Weisz played the voice of a dragon. The scenes that do have her in this film are actually good and I enjoyed what I saw from her. Its strange that the writers and director would limit her screen time when she is a well known and talented actress. This is a big mistake in my opinion. Colin Farrell is a charming and attractive man in real life but this film is made to make him docile and mediocre at best. This too is also very strange that the creators of this movie would take a straight up A-list actor like him and give him this kind of role. He did much better in the film Total Recall (2012) with Kate Beckinsale but I must say that even in that film, it was not his best work either, but way better than this boring protagonist.
The film focuses on the concept of duality and adversity. Strangely the characters in this film copy each other in order to “pair“. If someone is shortsighted than the other is shortsighted, even if they have to fake their condition. The concept of adversity shown in the form of regulations. This dictates how the characters can love each other. These concepts really come off as strange when executed in this movie. The characters are whacky and seem unrealistic. Sometimes the film is so boring that you just sit their and go for the ride without truly understanding what’s happening on screen, which most people won’t. I know that this film is supposed to come off as “deep” and “layered” but there are batter films to watch other than this.
The cinematography is average, nothing special at all. The lighting is not always good. Its that depressing post apocalyptic light that most audiences do not want to look at. Sometimes we will see good lighting indoors but the outdoors natural light is way better. Natural outdoors light is harder to film but shows up great in post production. The wardrobe, backgrounds, and set dressing are done very well. The coloring is well done most of the time. This is not a film that most people would like. I see that critics have rated this film rather high but in recent times due to certain science fiction film franchises mainly Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2018), good film by the way, the opinion of the audience may differ with the opinions of the critics. As a critic myself I would rather you watch another film other than this one. If your looking for a movie where Rachel Weisz is a supporting character to a male protagonist than watch the very good film The Fountain (2006) with Hugh Jackman or the film The constant Gardener (2005) with Ralph Fiennes. If you want to see Rachel Weisz as the main Protagonist who as active and effects the story very well than watch The Whistleblower (2010) with Benedict Cumberbatch and Monica Bellucci. I also highly recommend Agora (2009) a film I gave a perfect score, but stay away from the rehashed trash The Bourne Legacy (2012) B-movie all the way. As for this film The Lobster (2015) This movie is boring and I would not recommend it to anyone.
